Congratulations to RMS Year 8 student Issie Johnson who last weekend won the Under 13 Girls Foil title at the English Youth Fencing Championships

This comes after a highly successful year to date during the course of which Issie has been selected onto the England squad for Challenge Wratislavia, Poland in March (for the second year running); she also competed in the International Fencing Festival at Poznan, Poland earlier this month, coming 5th out of 81 girls.

Although Issie is only 13 her coach wanted to focus on Issie’s longer term development this year by entering her into competitions in a higher age group, mainly Cadets (Under 17s). She had some excellent last 16 results and is working towards GB Cadet selection over the coming year, with a current GB current ranking of 28th out of 80 Under 17s. The Cadet season will commence in earnest in September.

As part of her development year, Issie has attended some high calibre international training camps. The first was in Paris, run by Olympic gold medalist and renowned coach, Stefano Cerioni. At Easter she was in Gdańsk,Poland to train with their excellent Atena Gdańsk club.

Issie has continued to demonstrate a huge commitment to her training and her wonderful club, Fencers Club London, under the excellent leadership of coach Dominique Szokolovics. This has led to her refining her techniques and maturing in her outlook. Despite this focus on her longer term development she has still managed to achieve the above titles and accolades and the whole RMS community is incredibly proud of how she combines her fencing with her school work.

We look forward to bringing you more news of Issie's achievements!
