We are delighted to announce the appointment of Professor John Brewer as Chairman of the RMS Board of Governors, with immediate effect.

John’s career has been spent working in both the private sector and academia, where he has held senior leadership and management roles. He currently holds the posts of Pro Vice Chancellor for Global Engagement, and Professor of Applied Sport Science at St Mary’s University, Twickenham, and is a member of University Senior Leadership Team.

Previously he held roles at the University of Bedfordshire, was Director of Sports Science at GlaxoSmithKline, and ran his own sports science and sports injury business at Lilleshall National Sports Centre in Shropshire. He has published many papers and books and regularly features in the media, giving comments on areas related to sport and health. He was a Board Member of UK Anti-Doping for 9 years, and is currently a member of the Performance Oversight Committee member for UK Athletics.

John has held a number of consultancy roles, most notably for the Home Office in respect of police fitness. He is a keen runner, having just completed the London Marathon for the twentieth time, and wrote the Official Training Guide to Track Athletics for the London 2012 Olympic Games, as well as “Run Smart” and “Running Science”. John lives in Chesham and is married with two daughters, who are both former pupils of RMS, and has been an RMS Governor for 3 years.

John sends the following message to the RMS community:

“Having been associated with RMS for over 10 years as a parent and, more recently, as a Governor, I am both delighted and honoured to have become Chair of the Board of Governors. The School has a long and proud heritage, and I am confident that under the leadership of Kevin Carson, and with a strong and dynamic Senior Leadership Team, the Board of Governors will provide the support and scrutiny that will help the School to go from strength to strength. Our pupils are at the heart of all that we do, and ensuring that we continue to provide an environment and teaching that enables them all to excel, will be one of my main priorities as Chair.

I should also like to pay tribute to my predecessor, John Gould, who served the School with distinction for 12 years. John’s dedication to the School was unwavering, and during his time as Chair there were many new initiatives that included the Campaign for Excellence, the refurbishment of Cadogan House, and the opening of Ruspini House and Hind House. I am sure that everyone connected with RMS will want to join me in thanking John for the tremendous contribution that he has made to RMS, and we look forward to welcoming him back for a more formal “thank you” in due course”

Headmaster Kevin Carson says “I am delighted that somebody of the calibre of John Brewer has been appointed as Chair of Governors at RMS, and that his knowledge of education and his particular expertise regarding Higher Education will be of great benefit to our students and to RMS as a school. His knowledge of the school as both parent and governor will prove invaluable over the coming years and I am greatly looking forward to working with John and the board of  governors to build on the work of John Gould in order to ensure that RMS girls continue to receive a first-class education and are best prepared for the demands of twenty-first education and life.”
