Congratulations to Miranda, one of our 2020 Head Girls, who has been awarded first prize in one of the prestigious Newnham College essay prizes.

The new Philippa Fawcett Mathematics Essay Prize is named after the former Newnham student who in 1890 was the first woman to obtain the highest mark of all candidates for the Cambridge Mathematical Tripos. Newnham College’s annual essay prize competitions are designed to encourage ambitious female sixth form students to explore university-level subjects and themes and to develop their independent research and writing skills.

Newnham College is one of the University of Cambridge’s 31 colleges, and is well known for former students including Dame Emma Thompson, Professor Mary Beard, and Nobel Prize winner Dorothy Hodgkin amongst others.

This remarkable achievement follows a series of RMS mathematical super-successes this term showcasing a wealth of academic talent and enrichment at RMS. We look forward to sharing the photos of the Virtual Prize Ceremony next month.
